Florida offers a hunting experience unlike any other in the United States, characterized by subtropical environments and a year-round growing season that keeps the woods thick and green. For the handgun hunter, the Sunshine State is a paradise for feral hogs, which are found in every county and can be hunted year-round on private lands and during many seasons on public tracts. Florida is also home to the Osceola turkey—a subspecies found only in the Florida peninsula—and a unique population of whitetail deer that are generally smaller in body size but provide a challenging hunt in the thick saw palmetto scrub and cypress swamps where visibility is often limited to a few yards.
The terrain is notoriously flat, but what it lacks in elevation it makes up for in density and water. Hunters must navigate a mix of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and sprawling wetlands that can be difficult to traverse. The climate is the most significant factor here; it is hot and humid for much of the year, with a pronounced rainy season that can turn dry woods into standing water overnight. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are a constant companion, and hunters must be ever-mindful of the state's other apex predators, including alligators and the occasional Florida panther. Successful hunting often involves finding the "islands" of dry ground or glassing the edges of vast prairies during the cooler morning and evening hours.
Florida boasts one of the largest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) systems in the country, providing millions of acres of public access for those willing to do the research. The Ocala National Forest is a massive tract in central Florida, featuring the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest—a prime location for deer and hogs. Further south, the Big Cypress National Preserve offers a true wilderness experience in the Everglades ecosystem, where hunters can pursue game through a mosaic of cypress domes and wet prairies. In the south-central region, the J.W. Corbett WMA provides a mix of flatwoods and sawgrass marshes that are legendary for their hog hunting and rugged conditions.
