Nebraska is often overlooked by those traveling to the mountains further west, but it holds some of the most unique and productive hunting grounds in the Great Plains. The state’s geography is dominated by the Sandhills—the largest grass-stabilized dune system in the world—which provides a rolling, mesmerizing landscape of endless grass and hidden wetlands. In the far northwest, the Pine Ridge region offers a dramatic departure, with rugged canyons, ponderosa pine-topped ridges, and steep buttes that feel more like the Black Hills of South Dakota. These varied environments support healthy populations of both mule deer and whitetails, along with pronghorn and Merriam’s turkeys.
The climate is semi-arid in the west and more humid in the east, with extreme temperature swings being a constant factor. The wind is a near-permanent fixture on the Nebraska plains, challenging the handgun hunter’s marksmanship and requiring careful scent management. Early autumn can be hot and dry, but the arrival of a 'North Plains' blizzard can quickly turn the landscape into a challenging winter environment. Mule deer are often found glassing from the high dunes of the Sandhills, while whitetails stick to the brushy creek bottoms and agricultural edges that crisscross the state. Handgunners find the open yet rolling terrain of the Sandhills ideal for spot-and-stalk hunting, where the lack of vertical cover is balanced by the complex topography.
Public land is less abundant than in states further west, but the areas that exist are high quality. The Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest provides over 50,000 acres of rugged, forested terrain that is a primary destination for deer and elk hunters. Nearby, the Oglala National Grassland offers nearly 100,000 acres of wide-open prairie and badlands, excellent for pronghorn and mule deer. For those in the central part of the state, the Bessey Ranger District near Halsey provides a unique 'man-made' forest within the Sandhills, offering a mix of timber and grassland that attracts a wide range of game. Nebraska’s public lands offer a distinctive Plains experience for the adventurous hunter.
