Oregon offers a hunting experience of extremes, divided by the towering Cascade Range into two distinct worlds. To the west, the landscape is defined by the lush, rain-drenched coniferous forests of the Coast Range and the Douglas-fir stands of the Cascades. Here, the terrain is steep and the vegetation is often so dense that visibility is limited to a few dozen yards. East of the Cascades, the state opens into a vast high-desert plateau characterized by sagebrush basins, juniper woodlands, and rugged ponderosa pine forests. The climate follows this divide: the west is mild and wet, with persistent fog and rain throughout the autumn, while the east is arid and prone to severe cold and snow during the late rifle seasons.
The diversity of game species in Oregon is among the best in the nation. Hunters in the western forests pursue the elusive Columbian black-tailed deer and the massive Roosevelt elk, both of which thrive in the thick coastal timber. In the east, mule deer and Rocky Mountain elk are the primary targets, often requiring long-range glassing and "spot-and-stalk" tactics across the open ridges. Pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep are also found in the southeastern high desert, offering some of the state's most coveted tags. For the handgun hunter, Oregon’s varied environments offer both the challenge of navigating the "green wall" of the west and the need for precision at distance in the eastern basins.
With over 34 million acres of public land, Oregon provides incredible freedom for the DIY hunter. The Ochoco National Forest in central Oregon is a legendary destination for Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer, featuring beautiful park-like stands of ponderosa pine and open meadows. Further east, the Malheur National Forest offers vast, remote landscapes that are perfect for those seeking to escape the crowds in search of mature bulls and bucks. In the coastal west, the Tillamook State Forest provides large blocks of public timberland that are highly productive for black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk, offering a rugged, wet-woods hunting experience just a short drive from the Willamette Valley.
