New Jersey Handgun Hunting Regulations

Last Reviewed: October 27, 2026 Handgun Hunting: Not Permitted

Hunting Overview

New Jersey, despite its urban reputation, holds an incredible diversity of hunting environments that are meticulously managed for wildlife. The state is anchored by two major ecological regions: the Highlands in the north and the Pine Barrens in the south. The Highlands feature rugged, mountainous terrain with ancient granite ridges and deep, oak-forested valleys, offering a classic Appalachian hunting experience. The Pine Barrens, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a vast, 1.1-million-acre expanse of sandy-soiled coastal plain, dominated by pitch pine, scrub oak, and Atlantic white cedar swamps. This unique landscape requires specialized knowledge, as game movement is often dictated by subtle changes in soil moisture and vegetation density.

The coastal climate is relatively temperate but can be quite humid, with mild winters that keep game active throughout the season. Whitetail deer densities in New Jersey are among the highest in the country, leading to extended seasons and liberal bag limits that provide ample opportunity for the handgun hunter. Black bears have also seen a significant population surge in the northern counties, providing a challenging big-game opportunity in the rugged Highlands. The thick cover of the Pine Barrens and the rocky slopes of the north make a powerful handgun an ideal tool for navigating the tight quarters where many encounters occur.

Public land hunters have excellent options, starting with Wharton State Forest in the heart of the Pine Barrens. At over 122,000 acres, it is the largest state forest in New Jersey and provides endless miles of sand roads and thickets to explore. In the north, Stokes State Forest offers over 16,000 acres of rugged Highlands terrain along the Kittatinny Ridge, excellent for deer, bear, and turkey. The state’s Wildlife Management Area system, including large tracts like the Clinton WMA, adds hundreds of thousands of additional acres specifically managed for hunting. New Jersey’s public lands prove that even in a small state, a dedicated hunter can find a wild and productive experience.
